Hearing loss compensation claims

Commonly asked questions about hearing loss compensation claims:

In order to determine whether you have a hearing loss case, you must first speak to your GP and obtain a referral to an ear, nose and throat specialist for assessment. If you are found to have sufficient hearing loss, and it can be proved that it was a result of your exposure to noise in the workplace, then you may have a case for compensation.

Depending on the type and severity of hearing impairment you are suffering, your compensation can help you pay for:

  • Hearing aid/s (if your hearing loss has arisen as a direct result of your employment)
  • Loss of quality of life due to your hearing impairment
  • Other medical treatments and testing
  1. Firstly, you need to consult your GP, who will give you a WorkCover Certificate of Capacity and refer you to an ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist from WorkCover NSW’s approved list of assessors of permanent impairment for hearing
  2. Visit the ENT to undertake a physical assessment and audiogram
  3. Complete a workers injury claim form
  4. Give the completed form as well as the ENT specialist report and audiogram to your employer or their insurance company
  5. If you have been found to have 20.5% or more binaural hearing loss (both ears combined) then you would instead complete a permanent impairment claim form

You may also claim for permanent impairment if you have 6% binaural hearing loss and your hearing loss occurred before 1 January 2002, or you are a police officer, paramedic, firefighter, volunteer bush fire fighter or emergency services volunteer
