A member of the Law Society of NSW, David was admitted as a solicitor in 1979 and was a founding partner of Collins & Thompson (now Stacks Collins Thompson) the same year.

David has wide-ranging experience, encompassing conveyancing, commercial law, small business law, wills and estate planning, estate litigation and legal practice management.

Outside of law, David is an organic macadamia nut farmer and is also heavily involved in the local community. He is a life member of the Lions Club of Hornsby, which he has been involved with for over 35 years in varying roles, including four times as President. David also volunteers as convenor of the Legal Aid duty roster for Hornsby Local Court.

    Serious traffic offences

    Driving is an activity that many people undertake without much thought. However, it is easily the most risky activity that most people do on any day. The Australian road rules are actually quite particular and detailed, covering almost any situation that a driver would be confronted with. The rules also specify penalties for infringements. However, there are separate offences created by the criminal laws of Australia's states and territories that cover serious offences. "Dangerous driving" is driving in circumstances where the motorist is driving in circumstances that create a danger to the public. This would cover driving at a dangerous speed, but would also cover driving in a dangerous manner (such as swerving). There is also an offence of "reckless driving", which is driving without care as to the consequences. In some instances, driving at the speed limit is not a defence as a driver is always expected to drive in circumstances that are safe for the particular situation. These offences are thus quite technical and can depend a great deal on what actually happened.     Insurance and property damage

    Driving can also be a rather expensive activity if you are involved in a motor collision. While it is a requirement to have compulsory third party insurance in New South Wales and Queensland as part of keeping your car registered, this insurance only covers personal injury to people who are involved in the accident.

    Drivers may not be adequately insured (or even insured at all) against property damage when they are at fault. This may mean having to pursue someone in court to claim for the damage they have caused to your car. This is a clear example of where having an experienced traffic lawyer will help, as obtaining professional legal advice demonstrates your seriousness in recovering the costs of any property damage. In many cases, it may not be necessary to proceed to court. Many parties will be willing to engage in mediation or informal discussions that avoid the commitment of pursuing the matter in court.
