The Australian road rules are actually quite particular and detailed, covering almost any situation that a driver would be confronted with. The rules also specify penalties for infringements. However, there are separate offences created by the criminal laws of Australia's states and territories that cover serious offences.
"Dangerous driving" is driving in circumstances where the motorist is driving in circumstances that create a danger to the public. This would cover driving at a dangerous speed, but would also cover driving in a dangerous manner (such as swerving). There is also an offence of "reckless driving", which is driving without care as to the consequences. In some instances, driving at the speed limit is not a defence as a driver is always expected to drive in circumstances that are safe for the particular situation.

Insurance and property damage

Drivers may not be adequately insured (or even insured at all) against property damage when they are at fault. This may mean having to pursue someone in court to claim for the damage they have caused to your car.
